Update: Vendor Cybersecurity Incident

Update: Vendor Cybersecurity Incident
Posted on 05/08/2026

Dear San Diego Unified Families,

Instructure, the vendor for the Canvas platform, completed security fixes and restored use of Canvas.   The district will restore teachers’ and students’ access to Canvas this afternoon.   We are proceeding cautiously and are confident that resuming use of Canvas does not present a security risk.

More information about the Canvas security incident can be found at: https://www.instructure.com/incident_update

Sincerely,

W. Drew Rowlands
Deputy Superintendent, Operations
San Diego Unified School District

Posted May 7:

Dear San Diego Unified Families,

Our school district was notified on May 5, 2026 that Instructure (Canvas), a vendor some San Diego Unified middle and high schools use to manage assignments and grades, was the target of a worldwide cybersecurity incident.

Instructure has informed us no passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers or financial information were involved. Our school district was not a direct target. Our Information Technology Department is in communication with Instructure and has reinforced our expectations about upholding the highest data security standards.

At about 1:30 p.m. on May 7 Instructure shut off the Canvas platform to protect its customers. We are evaluating how shutting off Canvas is impacting our schools and will solve for it accordingly.

If there are any important updates, we will notify you.

Sincerely,

W. Drew Rowlands
Deputy Superintendent, Operations
San Diego Unified School District
