K-2 Reading Risk Screener Notification

K-2 Reading Risk Screener Notification
Posted on 08/22/2025

Starting in the 2025–2026 school year, all California schools will screen students in kindergarten through second grade to help identify early signs of reading difficulties, as required by Education Code 53008.  Please note that these yearly screenings are not new to our district. We have been screening students for reading difficulties as a best practice for the past few years.

In our district, we will use mClass DIBELS 8, a research-based screening tool that was adopted by our Board of Education on April 15, 2025. The goal of this screening is simple: to catch reading challenges early, so we can give students the right support at the right time. These results help your child’s teacher better understand how to support their learning, and also informs parents/guardians on how to  best support your child’s reading development at home.

Research shows that early support makes a big difference in helping children become confident, successful readers.

Because your child is in grades K–2, they will take part in this reading screener between August 11 and September 26, 2025. You’ll receive your child’s screening results within 30 days after the screening window closes.

It’s important to know that being identified as “at risk” does not mean a diagnosis of a reading disability. It just means your child may need extra support with some early reading skills compared to what is typically expected at this age. These results help your child’s teacher better understand how to support their learning.

If a student is flagged for risk, support may include:

  • Small-group instruction in the classroom that focuses on specific reading skills
  • Extra support in an intervention setting led by a trained reading specialist.
