A Message from Superintendent Bagula for 2026

A Message from Superintendent Bagula for 2026
Posted on 01/02/2026

Superintendent Dr. Fabi Bagula is starting 2026 with gratitude for the strength, hope, and partnership that define San Diego Unified. This year, our priorities remain steadfast: uplifting student voice, deepening our commitment to wellness, monitoring progress across all four student achievement goals, balancing the district budget, and advocating for full federal funding of special education.

Instead of traditional New Year’s resolutions, families are encouraged to talk with their child about setting meaningful goals—and to check in regularly to support progress and motivation.

The Superintendent also shared the district’s ongoing work to improve services for students with disabilities, while calling attention to chronic underfunding. San Diego Unified spends more than $400 million annually on special education services but receives about $125 million in support, including $30 million from IDEA. Families are encouraged to sign the petition demanding Congress fully fund special education.

This month, the Board of Education will receive an update on progress toward A–G requirements, and eligible students are encouraged to begin FAFSA or CADAA (closes March 2). FAFSA/CADAA help will be available at the bilingual college fair on January 24 at Logan Memorial Educational Campus.

January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month – the district is launching a revamped prevention program with updated staff training and family town halls (more info coming soon). We also honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a time for reflection, service, and community.
