Meet the Pros Behind Lunch Hero Day

Meet the Nutrition Pros Behind School Lunch Hero Day
Posted on 05/08/2026

On May 1, we celebrated School Lunch Hero Day across San Diego Unified and recognized the incredible individuals at the front lines of our school cafes. There’s a meaningful connection between school nutrition professionals, the food they serve, and the children they serve.

Being a school nutrition professional means working at the intersection of taste, science, and health. It’s a role that requires not only adaptability but heart and dedication. Whether they’re cooking, serving, or connecting with students, they wear many hats, but at the core of it all is a shared purpose: making a difference in a child’s day.

For many, the work is deeply personal. Vicky Lopez shared that her family inspired her journey in school nutrition.

“My sister has been working for San Diego Unified for 19 years; she’s so passionate about her job. My mom also worked for the district. Now I’m here, and I love this job; it’s so rewarding to know that I’m instilling healthy habits in kids.”

For Thomas Schultz, the role is both active and meaningful. “I get to feed kids all day. I also get a workout as a driver; some days I drive 60 miles depending on my route.”

Many of the nutrition professionals working in our district are reinventing themselves — finding not just a new career, but a meaningful calling in school nutrition.

Serena Tatum found her calling through a deeply personal experience. After being laid off during COVID, she began working at a school cafeteria and quickly realized the impact she could have.

“My daughter once told me the lunch lady made a difference for her. I knew I wanted to pay that back,” said Tatum. “My goal is to give extra care and love to kids who need it.”

guysFor others, it’s all about being part of the team that makes the biggest difference in a child’s school day. It’s been proven that when a student eats well, their academic performance improves, and their attention is more focused.

“I worked in restaurants before, but serving students is different; knowing that I’m helping students reach their full potential is so rewarding,” said Denisse Navarro. “Knowing my own kids are getting a nutritious meal at school gives me peace of mind and takes one more worry off my plate.”

These stories are just a glimpse into the passion, care, and dedication our school nutrition professionals bring to their work every day. They are chefs, drivers, mentors, and role models creating not just meals, but moments of connection and community.
