Blending Wellness & Nutrition

Blending Wellness & Nutrition for National Heart Month at Challenger Middle School
Posted on 02/06/2026

Lunchtime at Challenger Middle School got a healthy twist this month when Sandi Coast Cafe (San Diego Unified’s Food & Nutrition Services) rolled in something special — a blender bike!

pic“This event was really good for boosting exercise and heart health,” said Anastasia Randorff, a sixth grader at Challenger. “I rode the bike a few times; it’s really cool.”

To celebrate National Heart Month and Heart Health Week, students had the chance to hop on the bike and power their own berry smoothies with every pedal. With a few energetic spins, fresh berries and yogurt were blended into a delicious, heart-healthy treat. This interactive activity gave students a fun way to learn how movement and nutritious foods work together to support a strong heart.

“The strawberry smoothie was really good. It’s not super sweet; so it’s healthy — and not too bitter either,” said Grace Sah, an ASB member. “I also like the new entrées at the cafeteria. I’m really enjoying the mac and cheese right now and the fresh strawberries.”

In honor of National Frozen Yogurt Day, students also enjoyed samples of frozen Go-GURT, a cool and creamy option that pairs perfectly with an active lifestyle.

The blender bike experience is one of two new Farm to School enrichment tools designed to bring nutrition education to life on campus. By combining hands-on activities with healthy food experiences, Sandi Coast Cafe is creating more opportunities for students to connect what they learn in the classroom with what they see on their lunch trays.

“I’m obsessed with this bike. I want one for our school permanently,” said Nicole Zenker, PE Teacher. “It was a fun way to end heart health week, we love it!”

This was the second year that the Wellness Center and the Nursing Office at Challenger Middle hosted Heart Health Week. Other activities included an assembly where students wrote positive notes on cards, a CPR class led by the school’s nurse, a jump rope challenge, and a heart walk.

Sandi Coast Cafe is excited to continue rolling out engaging wellness activities across campuses this spring. Healthy habits start young and last a lifetime!
