Fertility / Menopause Benefits

Employees currently enrolled on either a United Healthcare (UHC) or UMR medical plan now have access to an industry-leading fertility and menopause benefit through Kindbody.  San Diego Unified is a member school district of CA Schools VEBA (Voluntary Employee Benefits Association) and the benefit through Kindbody is offered as a VEBA member benefit.

Kindbody provides diverse end-to-end fertility services - including fertility assessments, IVF, and IUI (coverage subject to treatment limits). In addition to clinical guidance, they offer dedicated Kindbody care navigation, digital tools, and education to help employees maneuver their personalized path to parenthood.

Note: Employees and spouses/partners enrolled on a district-sponsored Kaiser plan will have access to VEBA discounted rates at Kindbody Signature clinics. Additionally, VEBA members seeking services for fertility preservation (i.e., egg freezing) will have access to discounted rates at Kindbody Signature clinics. These discounts are offered directly by Kindbody and not through the CA Schools VEBA benefit program.

**NEW FOR 2026 - CHANGES EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2026**

With the enactment of California Senate Bill 729, all plans regulated by the Department of Managed Health Care are required to offer fertility services for plans beginning on January 1, 2026. To comply, all HMO medical plans (Kaiser, UHC, SIMNSA) will offer the mandated benefits and enrollees no longer need to access these services separately through Kindbody.

The enhanced benefit includes coverage for fertility care, including coverage for in-vitro fertilization (IVF), with three completed oocyte retrievals and unlimited embryo transfers.  The benefits on the UMR NexusACO PPO and Surest PPO (a plan for out of area dependents) will be augmented through KindBody to align with the state PPO mandate. Continuity of care for employees in the middle of treatment with Kindbody will be available through the 1st quarter of 2026.

In addition to fertility benefits embedded in an eligible medical plan, enrollees have access to additional services including KindMan, KindDoula, fertility preservation, and menopause support.
