Taft Eagle News

Dear Taft Families,

This is Principal Garcia-Rubio calling to welcome you to the 2021-2022 school year.

Welcome New Eagles

Thank you to our families who were able to join our New Eagle tour last Friday.  We also want to send a special shout-out to the student leaders who under the direction of Mr. Montoro and Mrs. Sanchez led those tours with Taft pride and preparation.

First Day of School

Our first day of in person classes will be tomorrow, Monday, Aug 30, 2021. Our gates will open at 8:30 a.m. and school will start promptly at 9:00 a.m.  Hybrid classes will not be offered on site. Families who are interested in online learning may contact our Virtual Academy via email at [email protected].

Update--Health and Safety Updates

Per our updated San Diego Unified School District guidelines, masks will be required indoors and outdoors for everyone.  Face masks are available for students who need them. We will continue our safety protocols with our air filters and air purifiers.

Welcome Vice Principal Dr. John Iverson

We would like to extend a warm Eagle welcome to Dr. John Iverson who is joining our staff as our new vice principal.  Dr. Iverson brings to us a wealth of experience and knowledge from his prior school experiences.  He was a vice principal in the state of Georgia and also taught social studies at the middle school level.  We are very excited to have him join our Eagle Family.

Our school hours are slightly different this year.  One change that we made to our schedule is the addition of a separate lunchtime for our 6th-grade students.  We also added an advisory class for all of our students.  During advisory class, students will work on social-emotional skills and project-based learning.  Our regular hours are 9:00 a.m. to 3:49 p.m.  We will have minimum day schedule on 17 Wednesdays during the school year.  A minimum day calendar is included in this communication.  On minimum days, our classes will end at 2:03 p.m.  Our first minimum day will be on Wednesday, September 8, 2021.

Class Schedules

Paper copies of our student schedules will be distributed tomorrow, Monday, August 30, 2021, at the front of the school and the Gramercy Drive gates.  Student schedules will have a copy of our school map on the back of their printed schedule so that our students can find their classes.  Questions regarding schedules may be directed to our Mrs. Jessica Sanchez, our Head Counselor I.  Please know that schedule changes may be coming ahead as we adjust our master schedule to accommodate our enrollment.  We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.  We are also pleased to welcome our Dual Language cohort from Juarez Elementary.  The Dual Language Pathway will formally continue this year at Taft.  Bienvenidos!

Physical Education classes will continue this year.  More information on the purchase P.E. uniforms and locks will come later this school year.

Regular California Vaccination Requirements

Students who are missing regular vaccinations may have a hold placed on their student schedule.  Our Health Office has been contacting families to advise them of this requirement.  These regular vaccinations are required by California Education Code and does not apply to the COVID-19 vaccine.  For more information, please contact our Health Office by calling 858-935-2650.

Breakfast and Meals

Breakfast will not be served on campus this school year.  Grab-and-go meal packs will be available at the end of the day for students to take home.  Lunch, however, will be served on campus.

On behalf of Dr. Iverson and myself, our teachers, our office staff, our custodial and cafeteria crews as well as our teaching assistants, we are thankful that you are a part of our community.  We are so happy to have our students back in person and we can't wait to see them tomorrow. We are looking forward to an amazing year of learning.

Thank you and go Eagles!
