Phase 1 Appointment Based Learning-Update

This week, were excited to welcome a small number of students and staff back onto our school campus as we began Phase 1-Appointment Based Learning. Beginning Tuesday, students visited campus each day and met with a member of the PBE team in small group and/or individual appointments. Visiting students continued to participate in their “live instruction” via Zoom with their teachers and classmates. Our team was prepared, though we were nervous and excited like we are for the first day of a new school year. We have posted signage reminding students, staff and families to maintain the 6 feet of distance from each other, wash hands and wear masks. Students met inside our classrooms- which are now all equipped with air purifiers or outside at the numerous shaded outdoor options. While we were well prepared to welcome students to campus, we made some adjustments and expect to continue to refine our practices as we add additional students for on-site appointments in the coming weeks. Although we have many students who would benefit from in-person appointment-based opportunities, we selected a very small number of students to return to campus this week.  Starting small allows us to apply a variety of policies and procedures, observe their implementation, and modify them as needed, in order to ensure for the health and safety of our community and build the necessary infrastructure for subsequent phases.

In selecting students to participate as we launch our reopening plan, we considered a variety of factors, including the following:

·         students' needs, participation in online learning, and ability to wear a mask (students must be able to wear a mask for the duration of their time on campus)

·         availability of staff, classrooms, and resources

·         ability to supervise, observe, and reflect on protocols and procedures

·         school schedules for learning and cleaning/sanitizing

·         student and staff movement patterns around campus

We look forward to inviting additional students after we successfully launch the beginning of our reopening plan and transition to subsequent phases.
