Dear San Diego Unified Family,

On behalf of all the educators and staff at San Diego Unified, I welcome you to the 2022-23 school year.

Whether you are returning to the district or are new to San Diego Unified, we’re excited for what the new school year has to offer. We welcome our students and families, educators, and staff to join in partnership to achieve equity, belonging, and a thriving learning environment - from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through high school.

The focus for this school year includes mental health and wellness because our students must know we care for them. We will continue our emphasis on academic rigor for students through standards-based learning and teaching, along with our commitment to extended learning opportunities and TK. Knowing how critical our staff are to the success of our students we will continue to recruit, retain, and provide opportunities for growth and development for staff. We’re optimistic for the new school year.

We know the COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone in some way, and for many families very profoundly. Health, safety, and wellness remain top priority in San Diego Unified. We will continue to implement COVID-19 safety protocols and mitigations, such as having accessible at-home testing and vaccinations. A sincere thank you for your cooperation and support over the past two years to reopen our schools and keep them open, knowing schools are the best places to learn and grow.

Additionally, we will work to maintain safe and secure school environments for all students, educators, and staff. Our schools are ready to respond to emergency situations with the sole commitment to keeping every student, employee, and person(s) on our school campuses safe.

As a former student of San Diego Unified, I’ve experienced the positive impact of a learning environment that is created for a student to be seen, heard, and loved. That is how I was able to thrive. I want all of our students to be seen, heard, loved and to be in environments where they can thrive along their own San Diego Unified journey. This is what I often refer to as the spirit of Ubuntu: I Am, Because We Are. It is in this spirit that we as a collective will come together and achieve equity, belonging, and students who thrive.

Thank you for being part of the San Diego Unified community.

Ubuntu!
