The Barona Band of Mission Indians has awarded students and teachers at Henry C. Johnson Elementary School in San Diego a $5,000 Barona Education Grant.

The grant was sponsored by California State Senator Toni Atkins. Barona Tribal Vice Chairman Ray Welch presented the $5,000 check to students and Principal Tracey Jenkins-Martin.

Johnson Elementary plans to use the grant to purchase "Swivls," which are video recording equipment that will help enhance student engagement and learning. "Swivls" will enable students to record projects and provide feedback to each other during group or individual student work times as well as help students record, produce and edit podcasts about their learning.

The Barona Education Grant program has awarded over $3.4 million to schools statewide.
