Arts Education Project

In the Arts Education Project (AEP), specially trained visiting teachers provide visual and performing arts lessons while elementary full grade-level teams are released for a three-hour block of collaborative time or PLCs. Students in AEP schools are given rotating arts instruction in three of the four arts disciplines: dance, music, theatre or visual art. Sequential, standards-based arts lessons have been written by VAPA resource teachers, who also train the visiting arts teachers on those lessons. Typically AEP provides eight lessons, approximately one per month, for every classroom. A sixteen-lesson program is also available.

AEP ran as a pilot project operating in six schools in 2016-2017; the program increased to 14 schools in 2017-2018, 24 schools in 2018-2019, and 30 schools in 2019-2020. The program was postponed during online learning in 2020-2021, but returned for the 2021-2022 school year. Since then AEP has provided class coverage and arts lessons for schools providing teachers professional learning through the Literacy Acceleration Plan. For more information about AEP in the current school year, including lessons, cycle schedules, and visiting teacher bios, please visit our AEP website.
