Our school district is focused on supporting the safety, well-being, and emotional health of our children. As our San Diego community works toward healing after the tragic event at the Islamic Center on Monday, there is a lot of information, and in some cases misinformation, being circulated online. We would like to offer you some guidance and resources to help you talk with your children about the graphic and disturbing content that is circulating online.
As young people spend more time online, we recognize the growing concern about exposure to graphic, violent, or disturbing content on social media, video platforms, gaming communities, and other online spaces.
We encourage families to speak openly with children and teens about the importance of avoiding hateful, gruesome videos and dangerous online activities. Some of the material now circulating online about the tragic event at the Islamic Center may be harmful content and may negatively impact the emotional and mental well-being of viewers.
Please remind your child that if they encounter disturbing, violent or hate speech content online, they should stop watching, avoid sharing the material with others, and speak with a trusted adult, parent, counselor, teacher, or school staff member.
Regular conversations about internet safety, digital responsibility, and emotional wellness can help students feel comfortable reporting concerns or uncomfortable situations. Two years ago our Board of Education passed policy and our district issued guidance for students and families about responsible social media use, which are linked below:
Thank you for your partnership in supporting the well-being and success of all students.
