SDSCPA Recognized Among California’s Exemplary Arts Education Schools
Posted on 03/23/2026

The School of Creative and Performing Arts is taking a well-deserved bow. San Diego Unified’s SDSCPA has been named one of just 19 schools in California to receive the 2026 California Exemplary Arts Education Award, recognizing schools that show an outstanding commitment to arts learning through strong programs, staff support, and equitable access for students.

That statewide honor reflects the heart of SDSCPA’s work. The school offers students in grades six through 12 rigorous academics alongside pre-professional arts training, with majors in dance, music, theatre, visual arts, creative writing, and design and production. The school says its mission is to prepare students for college, conservatory, and careers while fostering creativity, leadership, and critical thinking in an inclusive community.

The California Department of Education says this year’s awardees stood out for providing high-quality arts curriculum, instruction and assessment, professional learning for staff, and access to culturally responsive arts education for all students. SDSCPA’s selection places the school among a small group of campuses across California being recognized for the powerful role arts education plays in helping students build creativity, confidence, empathy, and self-expression.

The school will be recognized with other honorees at the California School Recognition Program Ceremony in Anaheim in April 2026.
