San Diego Unified is celebrating three outstanding Area A schools that have been named 2026 California Distinguished Schools by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.
- Challenger Middle School
- Mira Mesa High School
- Scripps Ranch High School
The California Distinguished Schools Program is one of the state’s highest honors for public schools, recognizing campuses that demonstrate exceptional student outcomes and strong support for student success. This year, 408 middle and high schools across California were selected for the prestigious distinction.
The recognition highlights schools that are excelling in academic achievement, helping historically underserved student groups make progress, and creating strong conditions for student learning. Schools are identified through the California School Dashboard and must meet rigorous accountability standards, including high participation in statewide assessments and positive school climate indicators.
For Area A, this recognition reflects the hard work of educators, staff, students, and families at Challenger Middle, Mira Mesa High, and Scripps Ranch High. Their selection as California Distinguished Schools underscores a shared commitment to academic excellence, opportunity, and student achievement.
The 2026 California Distinguished Schools will be recognized at an awards ceremony on April 24, 2026, at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.
