The Administrator’s Association of San Diego City Schools (Local 134, AFSA AFL-CIO) established the $2,500 Irene Beatrice Hightower Scholarship to honor the legacy of Principal Irene B. Hightower, a beloved leader, president of AASD, and principal of Hancock Elementary who passed away in December 2025. Known for her integrity, positivity, commitment to equity, and dedication to education, family, and the military community, Irene left a lasting impact on students and educators alike. This scholarship supports SD Unified graduating seniors who are children of active or retired military personnel, have a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA, plan to attend college for the first time in 2026, and intend to pursue a degree in Education; applicants must submit an online application including a transcript, essay, and letter of recommendation.
