SDSU Women’s Basketball Welcomes 3,000+ San Diego Unified Students for a Record-Breaking Day

More than 3,600 San Diego Unified School District students filled Viejas Arena on Wednesday January 14, and helped set a new attendance record for SDSU women’s basketball – 8,054.
Schools in attendance from Area C included Correia Middle, Language Academy TK-8, Mountain View TK-8 and Pacific Beach Middle.
The visit was part of a broader partnership between San Diego State University and San Diego Unified, designed to connect education, athletics, and community impact. Through these experiences, students are encouraged to stay active, build confidence, and begin imagining future college and career opportunities, which aligns with the school district’s goals for student outcome.
From the moment San Diego Unified students took their seats, they were fully engaged. Big-screen prompts encouraged them to cheer, clap, and make noise — and they delivered. For many students, it was their first time stepping onto a college campus and experiencing the excitement of a live collegiate sporting event, including interactions and autographs with the athletes.
The energy in the arena carried onto the court, where SDSU earned a 73–56 victory over New Mexico, breaking a program attendance record and extending the Aztecs’ winning streak.
“This community really rallies around our women’s basketball program,” said head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson. “These kids are just excited to be here. It’s loud, and it’s a great opportunity to expose our university to a bunch of young people.”
Additional student-focused events are planned throughout the season, continuing to create meaningful experiences that inspire students across San Diego. Click here for discounts to an upcoming SDSU women’s basketball game.
