I wanted to take a moment to share a meaningful and positive experience that recently took place at Logan Memorial High School at our hosted Girls/Boys Basketball Tournament in the school gymnasium.

During the final game of the tournament, Logan Memorial’s Boys Basketball team, led by Coach Cedric, had the opportunity to compete against Glenmary High School, a visiting program from Alberta, Canada. From the moment the team arrived, our student-athletes demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship, hospitality, and leadership that truly reflect the core values of our educational system.

Prior to the game, our boys took the initiative to provide Glenmary High School with San Diego Unified School District Athletics shirts, hats, and beanies as a gesture of goodwill and to wish them safe travels home. Before tip-off, the Logan Memorial community proudly played the Canadian National Anthem as a sign of respect and welcome, emphasizing unity through athletics and cultural appreciation.

Beyond the game itself, our student-athletes intentionally engaged with the visiting players—learning about their interests, experiences, and backgrounds. It was evident that our Boys Basketball program is not only focused on competition, but also on building young men who serve as ambassadors of our school, our district, and the values we strive to instill: respect, inclusivity, empathy, and global awareness.

The outcome of the game was secondary to the impact of the experience. Logan Memorial’s players worked to ensure that Glenmary High School left with a positive impression of our campus, our community, and high school athletics in San Diego. The interactions throughout the event embodied what education-based athletics represents—using sport as a platform to unite individuals across countries, cultures, and differences.

Experiences like this reinforce the importance of athletics in shaping leaders who represent our schools with pride, integrity, and compassion.

Go Eagles!
