Roosevelt International Middle School, an IB and Media Arts Magnet, has been recognized by the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) as the winner of the 2025 Clean Air Day Challenge in the school and school district category. The award honors Roosevelt for achieving the highest team participation across the San Diego region, with more students, families, and staff taking the California Clean Air Day pledge than any other school or district.

“We’re incredibly proud of our students and community for uniting around a shared goal of cleaner air and a healthier planet,” said Katie O’Malley, IB Coordinator at Roosevelt International Middle School. “This recognition reflects the collective power of education, creativity, and civic engagement that defines our IB & Media Arts Magnet.”

In celebration of Clean Air Day, Roosevelt students, staff, and families pledged to take meaningful personal actions—such as biking to school, carpooling, using public transportation, walking, and making lasting lifestyle changes at home. Their efforts resulted in the largest group participation in the San Diego region, demonstrating the school community’s strong commitment to sustainability.

Roosevelt’s work extends far beyond a single day. The school is deeply rooted in the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, and regularly engages students in environmental advocacy and global citizenship. Events such as Peace One Day, which promotes peace and environmental awareness, and participation in CicloSDias—a city-wide biking event that encourages car-free streets and active living—continue to build momentum for long-term climate and health benefits.

As an IB and Media Arts Magnet School in historic Balboa Park, Roosevelt weaves global thinking, creative expression, and environmental stewardship into everyday learning. Through student-driven projects in film, music, theatre, design, and digital storytelling, Roosevelt empowers students to use their voices, talents, and actions to make a positive impact both locally and globally.
