Muirlands Middle Expands University Partnerships to Boost Student Support in ELA and Math
Muirlands Middle School is strengthening academic support for students through growing partnerships with Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU), UC San Diego (UCSD), and now the University of San Diego (USD). These collaborations bring student teachers and paid tutors onto the Muirlands campus to work directly with students during the school day and in after-school programs.
During class, tutors and student teachers “push in” to English Language Arts (ELA) and math classrooms, providing targeted support for students who are working to get to grade level. After school, they continue to offer tutoring and homework help, ensuring students have multiple opportunities to practice skills and receive one-on-one or small-group assistance.
In total, Muirlands is now averaging more than 75 hours of ELA and math support every week from these university partners. The additional staffing is helping students build confidence, close learning gaps, and stay on track for success in middle school and beyond.
