Montgomery Middle School Media Arts and STEAM Magnet student Aubrey Yang was selected as a winner of Mayor Todd Gloria's Mayor for a Day Contest. On Jan. 15, she led the Pledge of Allegiance in front of 200 people at the Mayor's State of the City Address at City Hall.
The annual contest invites San Diego K-12 students to submit essays or videos about how they would make San Diego a better place if they were mayor. Winners shadow Mayor Gloria and other city leaders, attend meetings and events, and lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the State of the City Address. Mayor Gloria launched the contest to foster leadership in young people; at age 10, he was runner-up in a similar contest.
The program gives students the opportunity to advocate for issues important to them. When asked what she would change for young people in San Diego, Aubrey highlighted mental health, an issue that aligns with the district's commitment to improving student wellness.
At Montgomery Middle School, Aubrey participates in the school play, girls' basketball and girls' soccer. She spoke with us about her Mayor for a Day experience and what prepared her for this opportunity.
