Three San Diego Unified schools in Area B have been honored as 2026 California Distinguished Schools.
- De Portola Middle School
- Kearny High School
- Pershing Middle School
Announced by State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, the California Distinguished Schools Program recognizes schools across the state for exemplary student outcomes and a strong commitment to supporting student success. A total of 408 middle and high schools statewide received the 2026 distinction.
The award celebrates schools that stand out for high academic achievement, progress among historically underserved student groups, and overall student performance above state benchmarks. Schools are automatically considered using data from the California School Dashboard and must also meet statewide standards related to assessment participation, school climate, attendance, and discipline.
For Area B, this honor highlights the impact of dedicated educators, engaged families, and students working hard every day to achieve excellence. De Portola Middle School, Kearny High School, and Pershing Middle School each represent the strength of San Diego Unified’s commitment to preparing students for success in school and beyond.
These schools will be recognized alongside other honorees from across California on April 24, 2026, in Anaheim.
