Cody Petterson’s journey: from La Jolla schools to San Diego Unified president
The longtime La Jolla resident will lead the board as it grapples with a large projected budget deficit
SAN DIEGO -- For La Jolla resident and San Diego Unified School District board member Cody Petterson, representing his home neighborhood isn’t new. But being a leading voice for approximately 1 million San Diego-area residents is.
Petterson — whose District C includes La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Mission Bay and University City — was named president of the SDUSD Board of Education last month. His first act in that role was adjourning the Dec. 17 meeting in which he was selected by the rest of the board.
Petterson previously was board vice president. Both he and new Vice President Richard Barrera will serve in their positions for a year. Petterson’s term on the board expires in December 2026.
Petterson’s new responsibilities include presiding over meetings, overseeing development of agendas and serving as a spokesman for the board. He praised the departing president, Shana Hazan, for her ability to maintain momentum and delegate tasks to other board members.
Petterson said everyone on the board is focused on “representing the whole” district but answers specifically to residents of his or her subdistrict. As president, he will be the leading voice of the board at large.
