Americas's Healthiest Schools Named

35 San Diego Unified Schools Named America’s Healthiest Schools, Including Four All-Star Schools
Posted on 11/24/2025

Thirty-five schools across the San Diego Unified School District have been recognized as America’s Healthiest Schools, a national distinction sponsored by Kaiser Permanente and presented by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. The recognition honors schools that are leading the way in supporting the physical, mental, and social-emotional well-being of students, staff, and families.

Four San Diego Unified schools—Horton Elementary, Normal Heights Elementary, Edison Elementary, and Rowan Elementary—earned the top All-Star distinction, awarded to schools that excel in all nine topic areas measured by the program.

“Being recognized as one of America’s Healthiest Schools is a testament to the intentional work happening across our district every single day,” said Dr. Fabi Bagula, Superintendent of San Diego Unified School District. “Wellness is foundational to learning, and when we care for the whole child—physically, mentally, and emotionally—students are better able to grow, connect, and succeed. I am incredibly proud of our schools, our staff, and our families for building environments where every student can thrive. This award affirms our strong commitment to student wellness and the collective effort it takes to support healthy, vibrant school communities.”

America’s Healthiest Schools is one of the nation’s longest-running recognition programs honoring schools for creating healthier learning environments. Schools are evaluated across nine categories, including nutrition and food access, physical activity, staff well-being, social-emotional climate, and family engagement.

San Diego Unified’s recognition reflects the district’s ongoing progress toward Student Achievement Goal #1: Improve Student Wellness, and comes at a moment when the district is expanding its wellness work even further. The district’s newly approved Student Wellness Index, being developed in partnership with San Diego State University and the San Diego County Office of Education, will bring together a broad range of indicators—academic, behavioral, mental health, climate, and engagement—to provide a more holistic, student-centered understanding of wellness and guide future supports. This additional layer of accountability and insight aligns directly with the practices that contributed to the America’s Healthiest Schools recognition, reinforcing the district’s long-term commitment to ensuring every student feels safe, supported, and ready to learn.
